M4A 48 kHz

I have tried to mix down to M4A (AAC-LC) files selecting 48 kHz but I always get 44.1 kHz AAC files as output. Why ?
I have MTS 8.3 on macOS Sierra.

Thanks Giel. I would add that the song has been created (inside properties) with 44.1 kHz sample rate. Then I tried to mixdown as M4A at 44.1 and 48 kHz with same 44.1 kHz output.
