Can't you just set duration of 1/8 to dotted 1/2?

I want to tie the eighth note to the half note how does making the eighth note a dotted half note do that???(that puts an eighth note in the next measure, unwanted I want to tie the eighth note to the half note to finish the measure.)

You can select both notes, click 'MORE' and choose 'Merge Notes'.

Or you can delete the second note and adjust the duration of the first note.

In this case eighth note tied to Half note what duration would you use?
Double dot is an eighth note too long.

Duh. I get it 0.500 +0.125.
