MIDI Notation Goof

Hello,

I haven't been around the discussion forum for awhile, and trying to use MIDI as a search didn't help too much, so my apologies, if this has already been addressed.

I added several instrument parts with MIDI in a song project a few years back. My lack of experience led to an error, that will take me a long time to correct if I do it note-by-note (especially the drum part). My fingers are crossed that there is an easier way to fix this.

I set up my song project at 4/4 for 54 beats per minute and ended up with 43 measures in the project. In actuality, the song is 4/4 and 108 beats per minute and 86 measures. I did not realize this until I went to score out the melody for my PA copyright registration, and things looked odd.

My wave files, which there are many, fit in fine, when I started a new project (song) at 108 bpm, but my violins, drums, bass, and other stuff is obviously incorrect.

Is there a way to use the editor in MTS to change these midi files to where they should be? Every note is off by a factor of 2.

THANKS!

Fred

You can use the Tempo editor's Detach option and change the tempo without affecting the notes itself. Please see https://www.multitrackstudio.com/tempo.php (near the end of the page).

Thanks Giel,

I need to change the notes as well.

I guess I will keep messing around or just do it over.

No, you don't want to change the way the music sounds.

The manual even mentions this as an example for the Detach button. It probably can do it

I spent some hours working on this last night. The violin parts helped me figure out where I went wrong in the first place.

So my tempo was set at 54 beats a minute, but I start with a click track, and then play the guitar parts, then I sing the vocal part, and everything else comes after.

Transferring the wave files is not impacted when put into the song at 108 bpm. By song, I mean a song project like when you start a new project in MTS. Using the tempo editor, in the original song file , I changed the original project to 108 bpm and the wave files are fine and all the midi files are going at double time, and they stop halfway through the song.

So, I converted the MIDI file to a wave file in the 54 bpm project. I can then change that project to 108 bpm and the wave file sounds fine. Or, I can import that wave file into the 108 bpm project, and it also sounds fine.

I then transcribed the wave file to MIDI and found the following:

In the 54 bpm MIDI track, there may be a run of 4 1/8 notes in one measure.

In the 108 bpm MIDI track, there are 4 1/4 notes covering 2 measures.

If the detach function works to address this, I don’t know how to do that.

My song has for string tracks and a bass track on MIDI, And the easiest way was to just listen to the MIDI files after they were converted to a wave, and use my ears and enter the notes.

I am not going to be able to do that with the drums. My ears are not good enough for that.

If I explained it incorrectly, which led to confusion, I apologize. If the detach function will work to straighten this out on the drums I will set about working on that today.

I “finished” this project in January 2019. Until it came time to create a lead sheet for copyright registration, I didn’t realize what I had done, as listening to it I couldn’t tell the difference. I think it was 8/4 vs 4/4, which accounts for the note durations being off by a factor of two and the number of measures being off by a factor of two.

I sure appreciate your efforts to help me with this.

You can correct this like this:

- open the tempo editor
- engage the Detach button
- in the Tempo editor, click SEL ALL
- also in the Tempo editor, click EDIT
- in the new window, set BPM to 108 and click OK

THANK YOU
THANK YOU
THANK YOU
:D :D :D

I didn't do "Select All" when I tried it before, as I was just thinking of the tracks I was trying to adjust.

I sure appreciate it, Giel!
