Help... My song has lost its original tempo

Post by ZoeZoe »

I am so frustrated. Please help.

I have recorded a song with 14 tracks. I did not use the click on MTS- I used a metronome online. After recording all the tracks and doing a bunch of mixing I thought it wise to add a click to the track using the MTS "click track." The MTS click never lined up with the tempo of the online metronome, so I changed the tempo to try and reorder the midi clicks of the whole song. I chose both midi and audio tracks. I did that several times with slight tempo variations hoping that the beats of the drum would line up with the MTS "Clicks" track. Finally, I tried to use the option that enables MTS to use an audio track as the source tempo. I used an track that was consistent, but not perfect. Every measure of the entire midi click track had varying tempos. I tried "tap tempo" which also did not change everything. I was stumped.

I decided to delete the "Clicks" midi track from the song. That was a massive error. I got distracted and had to leave the computer. When I got back I pressed play to listen to the song and it was playing at half speed. Both Autosave backups were too recent and the last version saved was prior to some massive editing.

How do I get my tracks back to the original speed that they were recorded in?

Audio or MIDI?

Does the song still sound OK? In other words: is the problem that the bar lines don't line up with the sound?

I simply listened to the metronome online while recording the song.

When I added the click after recording 14 more tracks, my entire song sounded fine. Until I deleted the Midi "Clicks" track. Then when I tried to play it the entire song (every track) is playing at about 50% speed. I only added the click, so that we could include a drummer, or any other artist that may find it useful.

Do the audio tracks sound one octave lower now? In that case the audio playback device sample rate has changed I think.

No, they sound like someone slowed the playback speed down significantly... Literally sounds like half the normal speed and the song length is 30 to 40% longer.

As a note, the pitch seems to still be correct.

OK, so I think this is what happened:

- You tapped a new tempo for the BPM box.
- You were asked "Change the tempo of audio track as well?", and chose "Yes, do both audio and MIDI tracks".
- Then at some point you saved the song.

A simple fix would be to type a 30..40% higher value in the BPM box. The audio tracks have now been time-stretched multiple times, so sound quality will have suffered a bit.

Alternatively you can create a new song, and import the audio files from the old song in it. The original recordings should still be there, but it can be a bit of a mess if you did lots of partial recordings like punch-in.

I have tried to "add click track" and then change the tempo, but it does not change the speed of the song. There is no time stretching occuring when I just change the BPM value. The only thing that changes is the midi beat map.

Sorry, I meant the BPM box in the main screen. You've found the "Extract tempo from track" there I think.

There's also the Tempo Editor of course, that would work too. See https://multitrackstudio.com/tempo.php
