Vocal tuner not working

Hiya Giel,

I’m recording an 8 track song which is six Midi Tracks and Two Audio tracks. Every time I add the vocal tuner to the lead audio vocal track it freezes the entire program and MTS needs to be restarted (tracks not lost) and the vocal tuner effect deleted. Thus I have no vocal tuner. I’ve hard rebooted my ipad but that doesn’t change anythiing. I tried to send you a copy report but nothing appears when I hit copy report. I’m about 30 hours into this project and don’t want to lose what I have. Any suggestions.

HiYa Giel,

I just figured out that the “copy report” button actually copied the information to my clipboard. So I pasted it into my NOTES app and copy pasted it from there into an email that I sent to you at support@multitrackstudio.com. I checked on some of my old songs in MTS and the vocal tuner app input still seems to be functional. However if I make any attempt to add vocal tuner to any audio trwck, or make a changes to any pre-existing track, it freezes my MTS screen. I hope you can help me sort this out.

Thanks for the report. You're not using the latest iPadOS version, so it looks like nothing changed in terms of iPad or iPad OS version. Yet the Vocal Tuner stopped working

When exactly does the problem occur? When you load a Vocal Tuner in a slot? Or when you try to make the Vocal Tuner visible?
The Vocal Tuner reads the track's audio data when it becomes visible. It doesn't do much if it isn't visible and transport isn't running.

The problem doesn’t occur when vocal tuner is loaded into the slot. The problem occurs when the vocal tuner effect is actually opened up. At that point the screen switches to a blank vocal tuner screen and the entire MTS program is locked. Nothing works as the screen is completely frozen. I have to exit MTS entirely and restart the program, and at that point vocal tuner is no longer in the effect slot at all. This problem is intermittent, as sometimes the app opens and works correctly…..but very infrequently.

Even is vocal tuner seems to be working, it soon locks up again as soon as I try to use it.

Are there any crash logs in the Settings app?

You can find them in Privacy&Security > Analytics & Improvements > Analytics Data.
The MultitrackStudio ones start with "MtStudioMobile".

If there are logs that seem to be about the Vocal Tuner problem (because of date and time), can you please send one or two of them to support@multitrackstudio.com ?

I checked on the Analytics Data you referenced. There are 17 different MTstudiomobile-2024 entries on 11/13/24. I don’t know if any are specific to vocal tuner. I will send the first and the last to you by E-mail. Please let me know if more are needed.

Thanks! One of them actually does show the Vocal Tuner waiting for something, so that's very interesting. If time allows, I'd love to see a few more crash logs.

Thanks for the crash logs! I've found an issue with the Vocal Tuner in a stereo track. I don't see the major problems you see, but that's just because I'm lucky

Please try this:

- in the editor of your (stereo) vocal track, do "Select All" and then "Copy".
- add a new mono audio track.
- "Paste" in this track. At the beginning of course.

Now you have a mono vocal track, and you can try the Vocal Tuner in this track. Let me know how it goes.


By the way: is there any reason your vocal tracks are stereo? They would typically be mono because mics are mono.

I think you’ve hit the nail on its head. Once I copy/pasted the original stereo vocal track down to a new mono track, the vocal tuner seemed to work normally. I always record my own vocal tracks in mono and subsequently use panning and/or duplicate tracks to effect optimal stereo separation. Thus, I’ve never had this problem. However my singer/music collaborator has his own recording studio in a distant city, and uses a different computer/software recording system. For whatever reason, he generally records his vocal tracks in stereo (.wav format) then converts them to small stereo .m4a files that he sends to me attacked to text files. Often he has stereo effects already added to the vocals that he sends me. I copy the .m4a files that he sends me into Audioshare, optimize their volume and later import them directly as stereo audio tracks into my own MTS multitrack recordings. Thus, while his vocals always paste into my recordings as stereo tracks, mine are always in mono. He is old and now half-deaf and sings with many minor, but unacceptable, sharps and flats. Thus I need to do lots of vocal tuning to his vocal tracks. I’ve never had any problem editing them in stereo with vocal tuner in the past, but it now seems to be an issue. Has anything changed in the program or with iOS?? MY iPad Pro 9.7” currently uses iOS version 16.7.10, and won’t update any further.

For most recordings, the simple solution will be to have my singer send me dry mono files that I can vocal tune and either add my own effects, or send them back to him after tuning and rendering, and have him add his own stereo effects as he might desire. I also tweak the tuning on his vocals using the transpose editing function, but that often can be difficult without the visual cue that vocal tuner provides. Clearly, it would be easier if vocal tuning still worked directly with stereo vocal tracts. However if the current work around is reliable, it should be acceptable.

Looks like the bug was introduced about a year ago. There'll probably be a bugfix update soon.

Thanks for finding the bug. On my end it turns out my singer was unwittingly converting his mono .wav stems by default into stereo .m4a files before attaching them to text messages to send to me. Thus when I imported them into MTS they were all already in stereo format. He had the option of keeping them in their original mono format all along, he just didn’t have that set as his default. He’s currently updating his export templates.

Looks like the various problems are all in resolution phase. Thanks again for your considerable expertise and kind assistance.
