There is software available to convert mp3 or wav files to midi files - but it really doesn't do a very good job, especially with polyphonic signals - maybe in the future.
Some more info... http://mp3.about.com/library/weekly/aa1 ... toMIDI.htm
These sites have some conversion examples to listen to... http://www.pluto.dti.ne.jp/~araki/amazingmidi/

CD's to MIDI? Good luck....
Hi
Since I had managed to lose a number of completed orchestrations of my original songs in this format, MIDI from audio is something I very dearly wished I could do. And I completed my own search for such a product.
I have yet to see this sort of conversion (sort of like alchemy--lead into gold) happen reliably,
although there are programs such as Guitar Synth that can recognize chords--(polyphony) but not at high speed, streaming; such as in an audo file, similar to a guitar
Another program is out there; and I think it's Russian, that says that it has made huge advances is called "WIDI." I think I found it readily from a Google search but haven't tried the demo after previous dismal and discouraging with similar products.

I tried one of these
I tried one of these programs, and what i found was that, if you convert one track at a time you can do this, it is still not an exact science, but a lot is detirmined by how complex the file is also.
