Sound On Sound - Building a Drum Track, How?

I may be misunderstanding the intention, with a four bar cycle and building a drum part (kick, snare, hat etc) one piece at a time (MIDI) do I have to stop, and restart each cycle each time if I want to hear the sound on sound? Can MTS playback the building of the part as you go?
