Hi

This may be a starter question so be gentle.

Can I record guitar direct from guitar to laptop (using USB cable) straight into Multitrack studio? It seems to automatically think it's a microphone and can't change it.

Are you sure it's a USB cable?

If it really is USB it would have to be some kind of audio interface device. It would appear in the Windows 'Sound' settings page, and it would be listen in MultitrackStudio's Devices window.

Do I need to put the guitar through a preamp?

A preamp can improve sound quality if the audio interface doesn't have a hi-Z ('instrument') input. But it won't make things work if it doesn't work without one.
