bringing effects in and out

If I'm playing guitar on stage and I want an extra effect (like fuzz or echo) in part of a song, I can step forwards and tap a footswitch for the appropriate pedal for the desired part, then tap the switch to take it off again. How do I do this in MTS?
The only way I can see to do this is to duplicate my guitar track, put the extra effect on all of it, then play this simultaneously with the original but using the fader control on each track so that I start with the original only (ie , effected track faded out), switch to the effected track (original track faded out), then back to the original (effected track faded out). However, this uses up extra track space on the computer screen, inconvenient if you have several tracks of other instruments. And "my" solution would require a second duplicate if I had two effects I wanted to bring in out independently of each other.
Surely there's a better way to switch in effects just when I need them, without having to duplicate the track?
